Review into Supporting People announced

3 Dec 2009

2 December 2009

A review into how the Supporting People Scheme works has been announced by Jocelyn Davies AM, Deputy Minister for Housing yesterday (2 December).

Supporting People provides housing related support to help vulnerable people to live as independently as possible in the community. This could be in their own homes or in hostels, sheltered housing or other specialised supported housing. It offers practical help through debt counselling, life skills training and advice on paying bills and filling in forms.

The review will examine current policies and resources that deliver housing related support.

The Supporting People programme makes a significant contribution to the public purse, there is an estimated saving of £1.68 for every £1 spent on housing related support services.

Ms Davies said:
"We are now in a period of economic uncertainty where the housing-related support services provided under the Supporting People initiative are more important than ever.

"This is a crucial time for housing and the challenges have never been greater for both people in need of housing and the public sector.  It is time for us to examine the successes of the programme and identify areas where we can maximise service provision for vulnerable people in Wales.

"It is my intention that this review will be independent, transparent and comprehensive and will take on board evidence from stakeholders including service users across Wales.

"I hope this review will enable us to give the best possible support to those who need it."

The strategic aims for the review are that we have housing related support services that:

·      Services that are tailored to meet individual needs

·      Maximum gain from all resources utilized

·      High quality service

·      Demonstrate value for money
