WWA supports Welsh Government's 6 Nations Domestic Abuse Campaign

Communities Minister, Carl Sargeant launched a campaign today (3rd Feb) to tackle the increased levels of domestic violence that occur around the time of major sporting events such as the Six Nations rugby tournament.

First Minister launches Christmas domestic abuse campaign with WWA's support

Today (5th December), the Welsh Government launched their Christmas campaign to tackle domestic abuse. The launch took place in Cardiff City Centre, where a giant Letter to Santa was set up to raise awareness of the detrimental effects of domestic abuse on children and young people. This is the second stage of the Welsh Government's "Live Fear Free" campaign to tackle violence against women in Wales.

3 million women across the UK experience rape, domestic violence, forced marriage, stalking, sexual exploitation, trafficking and other forms of violence every year (EVAW) At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime — with the abuser usually someone known to her.

Statistics & Research

  • In over 90% of domestic abuse incidents, a child is present or in an adjacent room.
  • 30% of domestic abuse starts, or gets worse, during pregnancy.
  • According to the 2009-10 British Crime Survey, the majority (73%) of domestic abuse is carried out by men against women.
  • Domestic abuse accounts for almost 25% of all recorded violent crime.
  • One in four women will be affected by domestic abuse in their lifetimes.
  • Two women a week are killed by their partner or ex-partner in England & Wales.
  • 54% of rapes in the UK are committed by a woman’s current or former partner.
  • Nearly 75% of children on the Child Protection register live in households where domestic abuse occurs.

WOMEN’S AID SERVICES SNAPSHOT 2011
On 14th February 2011, Welsh Women’s Aid (WWA) collected the following information from all of our 31 member groups across Wales, to provide a snapshot of the vital services provided by our groups in a day.

REFUGE

  • 211 women were living in WWA refuges, with a total of 167 dependent children.
  • 56 women contacted WWA groups requiring refuge accommodation. Between them, these women had 43 children.
  • WWA groups were unable to provide refuge to 44 women.
  • 40 of the children and young people** living in WWA refuges were, or had previously been, on the Child Protection Register. This included 1 baby who was born in refuge on Valentine’s Day.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

  • WWA member groups supported 1063 women, with a further 152 on waiting lists for community support
  • WWA member groups supported 897 children and young people directly, and 30 children and young people indirectly, with a further 94 on waiting lists for community support.
  • 97 of these children and young people were, or had previously been, on the Child Protection Register.
  • 80 women accessed WWA member group's drop-in services, and 225 telephoned our groups for support.

NEW SERVICE USERS

  • 90 women and 11 children and young people contacted our groups for the first time.

The Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline collects statistical information about the service users and organisation who contact the Helpline.

The helpline to date has received over 80,000 total dialled calls since the helpline first went live in 2004.

Between April 2009 - March 2010, the Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline managed a total of 26,014 calls.

  • In 2009-10, 20,241 calls were made to the Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline. This figure represents all calls made to the Helpline.
  • The number of calls made represented an 18% increase on the calls made for the same period in 2008-09.
  • In March 2010 alone, the Helpline received 1976 incoming calls.

Of the callers who were experiencing domestic abuse:

  • 97% of the callers were female
  • 112 of the callers were men
  • 74% were aged between 26-45 years
  • 2% reported that they were pregnant
  • 5% reported that they had a disability
  • Almost half of the callers (40%) reported that they had children
  • The majority of callers were experiencing abuse by their current or former male partner.

Statistics collated by the Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline relate only to new/first-time callers.

How does WWA use the data provided by Member groups?

Welsh Assembly Government: Statistics are used to illustrate to the Welsh Assembly that there is still a need for domestic abuse services and to identify gaps in service provision, as well as identifying trends and providing evidence to legislative bodies and funders.

Research: We provide statistics to outside organisations and individuals who are conducting research in the field of domestic abuse.

Consultations: Specialist members of the national team and external agencies use the statistics to respond to various consultations, and the statistics are also used to respond to media requests. We regularly receive requests for up to date statistics on domestic abuse from Media sources, domestic abuse coordinators, and other organisations.

Campaigning & Funding Applications: The statistical data that we collect can be used to more effectively campaign for other resources.
